Externship Frequently Asked Questions
- Please fill out and submit our application. You will have the opportunity to add your dates of availability and additional details for your requirements.
- You will receive emails and a connection call from the Student Programs Team and your hospital location. If you do not hear from the team within 14 days of submission, please email DVMExterns@vca.com for DVM applications or VTVAExterns@vca.com for Veterinary Technician and Assistant applications.
- The Hospital Team will provide you with all the necessary information to make your Externship a success.
An externship at VCA is an opportunity to practice and gain constructive feedback working along with our medical teams in case management and procedural skills. It involves immersion in daily operational tasks such as medical rounds, client communications, diagnostic acumen, and patient planning. It introduces WOOFware and WOOFUniversity, our custom medical record management system and educational support platforms. Externship length is based upon school program requirements.
Our DVM Student Externships and Veterinary Technician Student Externships can be paid to assist with travel expenses at most of our locations and may vary with school regulations. We offer hourly wages or travel stipends as methods of payment depending on school regulations.
DVM Externships are for credited or elective requirements as part of your educational program. The primary purpose is to practice and observe clinical skills working alongside our teams reinforcing classroom knowledge. Externships can be scheduled year-round.
VCA does not offer working volunteer experiences. Please search for open roles.
VCA does not provide routine housing for externships. We can provide limited housing in Alaska for externships when available.
Yes! You can visit multiple locations as time permits for your externships. We are happy to work with you.
