The Joys and Challenges of Veterinary Internships: Dr. Adi Oz and Dr. Negeen Najafi
In this episode of the VCA Voice Podcast, Dr. Adi Oz and Dr. Negeen Najafi discuss their unique journeys in veterinary medicine and their decision to pursue internships.
Why I chose VCA for my internship – and why I stayed on full time
Billie Ciotti had options. The graduate of Midwestern University had purposely visited multiple clinics to get a sense for their internship programs before she chose one. In the end, VCA stood above the rest.
Generally speaking, mentorship programs don't have specialists or offer the heavy didactic teaching that a rotating internship provides. A rotating internship equals one more year in a teaching hospital, while a mentorship program is considered on-the-job training. An internship is required for most specialties.
If you want to become a better doctor faster, yes! After completing an internship, your options multiply. You can go on to be a great ER or urgent care doctor, an amazing general practitioner, or pursue a residency. Our internships aren't just for those specializing. They are for anyone looking to increase their confidence with the support of a caring team.
Absolutely! Many doctors decide to do an internship after going into practice, especially if they are considering pursuing a specialty. Some doctors who started in a mentorship program realize they want the more intensive training of an internship. If you’re wondering if an internship is the right path, schedule a call to discuss your options with Dr. Odie.
We aim to level the playing field and help all students apply equally. That's why our Veterinary Internship and Residency Matching Program (VIRMP.org) is a structured application process. There are precise dates for applying, ranking hospitals, and getting results.
Yes, we do. These programs are generally outside of the VIRMP match due to timing. Please contact us if you are interested.
First, think of your post-internship goals. If you want to become a surgeon, find a hospital with many surgeons. If you want to be a great GP faster, look for an active program with many specialists to get as much experience as possible. When it comes to our internship programs, there are no two alike, so if you are unsure or curious, chat with Dr. Odie. To schedule a Zoom call with him, email dr.odie@vca.com
At VCA, we believe in investing in our people. That's why we proudly pay above the national average. We pay $80,000 a year for all interns and resident salaries. Additionally, as an intern graduate, your varied caseload could lead to a higher annual salary. The more you know, the less you'll refer out.
